Carlisle International Workers Memorial Day

Every year more people are killed at work than in wars. Most don't die of mystery ailments, or in tragic "accidents". They die because an employer decided their safety just wasn't that important a priority. International Workers Memorial Day 28 April commemorates those workers.
With last year the hottest year on record, the theme for 2024's Workers' Memorial Day is the impacts of climate change on occupational health and safety. Death at work and employment disruption as a result of global warming, not to mention occupational illnesses caused by polluting fossil fuels, are rising everywhere, and are only expected to increase.
Stand with us this year to remember the early victims of climate change-caused heat stress, UV radiation, air pollution, industrial accidents, extreme weather events, vector-borne diseases, and chemical exposure. And commit to fight for a world that's more, not less, safe to live and work in.
Here's the details of our event:
We are planning to gather again at 11.30am outside the Crown and Mitre Hotel with a photo shoot with union banners and flags around 11.50 prior to lining up at 11.55 around the Carlisle Cross in front of the Old Town Hall for the commemoration. PLEASE BRING YOUR UNION BANNERS AND FLAGS - let’s make it an impressive visual display of trades union activism and solidarity in Carlisle and Cumbria.
At 12 noon there will be a minute’s silence for all those workers who have lost their lives due to accidents at work and through industrial diseases - as we have in previous years, we will also be remembering all those key workers who worked through, and lost their lives, during the Covid pandemic, including those in the health and care services.
