Derby International Workers Memorial Day

Every year more people are killed at work than in wars. Most don't die of mystery ailments, or in tragic "accidents". They die because an employer decided their safety just wasn't that important a priority. International Workers Memorial Day 28 April commemorates those workers.

With last year the hottest year on record, the theme for 2024's Workers' Memorial Day is the impacts of climate change on occupational health and safety. Death at work and employment disruption as a result of global warming, not to mention occupational illnesses caused by polluting fossil fuels, are rising everywhere, and are only expected to increase.

Stand with us this year to remember the early victims of climate change-caused heat stress, UV radiation, air pollution, industrial accidents, extreme weather events, vector-borne diseases, and chemical exposure. And commit to fight for a world that's more, not less, safe to live and work in.

Here's the details of our event: GMB D44 member and a representative at DATUC - Derby Area Trades Union Council will be leading the congregation at Broadway Baptist Church at Intercessions on 28 April 2024. Focusing the power of collective prayer as we remember those lost at work and in their workplaces

Those who gave much to the world; as individuals, family members, friends and work colleagues.

Whilst also remembering their families in their enormous sadness.

We pray for all those who have died at work building a better place for the rest of us.

Those who died while constructing buildings and motorways, railways and schools. On hospital wards and when protecting our rights and freedoms as police and prison officers.

For those who have died young and innocent, victims of avoidable accidents

May we learn from this loss, honour the memory of those lost

And to work towards a safer work place for all people throughout the world

In the hope that the rights and dignity of all, to be safe when at work are upheld above all else.
