National Union of Journalists
The National Union of Journalists is the voice for journalists and journalism.
The NUJ is an inclusive union and represents a broad range of media professionals.
We strive to improve the pay and conditions of our members and protect and promote media freedom, professionalism and ethical standards.
The NUJ is an active union – our members campaign and negotiate to ensure we are properly rewarded for the skilled work we do.
The union is represented in towns and cities all over the UK, Ireland and parts of Europe. NUJ members act together to improve living standards and working lives.
They are represented across the media – as staffers, casuals and freelances in broadcasting, newspapers, magazines, books, public relations, photographers and in new media.

Stop the rise in death threats against Northern Ireland journalistsThe NUJ believes a free, independent media is a cornerstone of democracy. No group can be allowed to undermine the freedom of the press. Every effort must be made to ensure that those who are guilty of intimidation are brought to justice. We call for the immediate withdrawal of all threats against journalists in Northern Ireland and for the freedom of the press to be respected and protected.1,078 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by NUJ Campaigns
Help support the NUJ's recovery plan for the news industryJournalists – whether they are staff or freelance – need to be valued and their livelihoods protected. Targeted measures aimed at supporting quality journalism and bolstering independent, diverse, ethically-produced content are urgently needed. Covid-19 has demonstrated just how important credible, trusted news and information is, and NUJ members will play a vital role in reflecting and shaping the recovery yet to come. But this is not and cannot be about the preservation of the status quo. Journalists are not seeking handouts or compensation for the industry – we are looking for investment in our future to transform the news industry, make it fit for our collective purpose and truly serve the public good. Pledge your support today for the NUJ's recovery plan to create a news industry reimagined. Reverse journalist cuts at NewsquestQuality journalism is at the heart of a healthy democracy. It helps to keep people informed, combat fake news and holds those in power to account. Yet the local media industry is in crisis. Newsquest is the second largest owner of regional and local newspapers in the UK and the company dominates the media industry in Cumbria. Newsquest bought a series of newspaper titles in Cumbria earlier this year and since then the effect on local newsrooms has been detrimental and dramatic. The company has driven away experienced local journalists, whose professionalism, ethics and local standing has benefited the company - and the local community - enormously. Collectively, their departure represents a catastrophic loss of experience and knowledge. NUJ members working for the Carlisle News and Star, the Cumberland News, the Workington Times and Star and the Whitehaven News newspapers took strike action on Thursday 20 December and need your support in their continuing campaign. Please support the staff at Newsquest's Cumbrian papers and send a message to Managing Director Johnathan Lee.673 of 800 SignaturesCreated by Sarah Kavanagh
