Repower British Industry
From assembly lines in Birmingham to the chemical plants of Teesside, British industry is at a critical crossroads. All of us working in industry want job security and for our communities to prosper, yet too often decisions about our jobs are made in Westminster or by money hungry CEOs in distant boardrooms.
Decades of underinvestment, cheap imports, automation and rising energy costs mean that most of us know a workplace that's closed or is on the brink of crisis. And when the manufacturing industry and its related supply chains suffer, entire communities pay the price: families struggling to pay rent, run-down high streets and fewer opportunities for the next generation.
But industrial decline isn't inevitable. It's a choice that politicians can make. With the right industrial strategy, investment in clean technologies and paying attention to workers' expertise, Britain can safeguard hundreds of thousands of jobs while creating many more for the future. The difference between good jobs and lost jobs is having a plan.
