Standing up for science

We are deeply concerned by the US decision to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), and more recently to block federal scientists from attending the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) meeting in Hangzhou, China.
These international bodies give a stable home to the science tackling some of the most pressing challenges the world has ever known.
In an era of misinformation, it is more important than ever that science is under the protection of such trusted, independent authorities. We now have an additional responsibility to keep them thriving until we can welcome our US colleagues back.
We must always be prepared to speak up for the principles of science itself wherever they come under attack from ideological, commercial, or personal agendas.
We urge UK political and scientific leaders to give public support to supranational research partnerships, and to recommit to both the principle, and material support for UK scientists’ participation.

Why is this important?
Science has always been an international endeavour. We in the UK benefit from rich collaboration and exchange with colleagues and friends among the global scientific community. We benefit from a diverse and inclusive workforce, at home and abroad, as the engine of scientific creativity. This underpins economic growth, industrial success, and societal progress.
We stand in solidarity with scientists around the world whose work is under threat from ideological politics.
