GMMH, DON’T DENY PATIENTS MENTAL HEALTH CARE

As Care Co-ordinators and Support Workers in the Early Intervention Teams, we work with extremely vulnerable people who have experienced a first episode of psychosis.
It's an important and demanding vocation, that we are committed to.
Recently, Greater Manchester Mental Health Trust asked Care Co-ordinators and Support Workers in the Early Intervention Service to volunteer for 7 day working, but we are telling the Trust that the service is so overstretched that asking us to spread across 7 days is not safe without additional staffing and resources.
Due to the chronic under-staffing in the Early Intervention Teams, we have too many cases to be able to provide the safe service patients need. The pressure and the priority given to more and more urgent work is so much that staff in the teams keep leaving, which is making the caseloads higher and higher for those Care Co-ordinators and Support Workers who remain.

Why is this important?
Vulnerable people are suffering as the demand on the service has increased since Covid. The service needs sustainable staffing to remedy these issues.
Demand for the service is predicted to rise by a further 30% post pandemic. Now the Trust are asking Care Co-ordinators and Support Workers to stretch across a 7 day service.
This will leave the service even more stretched than before and leave service users, Care-Co-ordinators and Support Workers at risk.
We in UNISON have asked the Trust to put a pause on asking staff in EIS to start working 7 days until the Trust have addressed the key issues affecting us in our Care Co-ordinator and Support Worker roles.
We have asked the Trust to :
* Ensure manageable and safe caseloads, with an assessment of cases which takes into account each individual service user's needs.
* Show a solid commitment to address the staff retention crisis in all Community Teams.
Now we are asking you to show your support for the Care Co-ordinators, Support Workers and service users of the Early Intervention Service , to help us get the resources we need from the Trust in order for EIS to run an effective service.
