End the crew change crisis

We are calling on governments and the UN to ensure that seafarers are designated as key workers in every country and enable them to pass through borders closed due to Covid-19 restrictions.

This will allow crew changes to take place, helping to deliver an end to the crew change crisis.

Why is this important?

An estimated 400,000 seafarers from across the globe are stranded on ships, continuing to work but unable to be relieved, in a crew change crisis which threatens trade and maritime safety. Some seafarers have now been at sea for up to 18 months without a break. An equivalent number have been unable to join their ships to work, and many have not been able to claim any government financial support.

Reasons for signing

  • Seafarers are vital to us yet they are consistently undervalued, even devalued. Their contribution must be acknowledged NOW - such acknowledgement is scandalously overdue.
  • The rights of Seafarers to be re-patriated when their Leave is due should be respected under the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 and therefore highlighted through this Campaign.
  • I have been a seafarer for nearly all my life so I do know how it is like when your time has come to be relieved and that it shows that your reliever will not come. It happened to me more than once and I felt so much frustration... Now plenty of guys have been on board for more than a year and they're discouraged to see that once again seamen are mistreated and considered as the lowest grade men in the world which is NOT TRUE !
