GMB/UNISON say SAFE SCHOOLS NOW! Support Teaching Assistants at St Luke's Primary-Tower Hamlets!

Over the Easter holidays, five Teaching Assistants at St Luke's Primary School were made redundant, leaving the same amount of children in the school with significantly less staff. Teaching Assistants were already going above & beyond in their day to day roles, and now they are concerned for the safety of not only themselves, but the children they look after, now that the cuts have been made. They are stretched thin on the ground, and they worry about going into work every day, not knowing whether their will be enough staff to ensure that children with SEN or EHCPs will have the support they need to get through the day safely, and whether mainstream children will have their education disrupted due to the lack of staff.
A good, safe education for the children in their care is their highest priority. This is why they have gone on strike, to try and get the school to listen to their concerns around the health & safety issues after the staffing cuts. All they want is to be able to go into work, support the children's education, and not worry about whether someone will get hurt today. The only way we believe this will happen is if the Headteacher and the Governors decide to reverse the ill-thought out and hasty cuts they have made to the group of staff who primarily support the children with Special Educational Needs or dysregulated behaviour. This is not to mention the mainstream children whose education is being impacted and disrupted by a lack of support for the children who need it.

Why is this important?
As the school have not seemed to grasp the seriousness of the situation, we are asking for support from the community whose children attend St Luke's and the schools around the Isle of Dogs to make the school listen to our concerns! We want to make sure the staff that look after your children can come to work safely, and have the necessary resources to care for your children during the school day. We look after your children, who looks out for us?
Please sign this petition to support striking St Luke's staff, so we can safely get back to work in supporting your children, to make sure they get a safe and decent education! Please also show your support by attending the demonstrations outside the school on Tuesday 20th, Weds 21st, and Thursday 22nd May from 7:30-10am!
